Understanding Credits¶
Credits are the unit of consumption in Mention. Most AI-powered actions use credits when they run. This page explains what consumes credits, how to monitor usage, and what happens when credits run out.
What consumes credits¶
The following actions consume credits:
| Action | When it happens |
|---|---|
| Article generation | A member opens a concept for the first time and an article is created — or regenerates an existing one (see Curating Glossaries) |
| SOP generation | A member opens a process for the first time and an SOP is created — or regenerates an existing one (see Curating Playbooks) |
| Knowledge check grading | A member submits a knowledge-check quiz |
| Grounded Q&A | A member asks a question through the Q&A footer (in learning, or via Steering) |
| Content analysis | Activated assets are analyzed to extract concepts and processes |
| Glossary rebuilds | The glossary is re-analyzed after new assets are added |
| Contradiction detection | An admin triggers detection to scan for conflicting facts across sources |
Credits are consumed automatically as your team uses the platform. You do not need to allocate or assign credits manually.
How credits are displayed¶
The admin sidebar shows your credit usage:
- Credit count — Displayed as a ratio (e.g., "12,400 / 200,000 credits"), showing how many credits have been used out of the total monthly allocation
- Progress bar — A visual indicator of how much of the allocation has been consumed
For organizations on the Unlimited plan, the credit meter and counts are hidden. Only the plan label is shown.
Monthly reset¶
Credits reset at the beginning of each billing cycle:
- Your usage counter resets to zero
- You receive your full monthly allocation again
- Unused credits do not roll over — each cycle starts fresh
What happens when credits run out¶
When your organization has used all available credits for the current billing cycle:
- Actions that require credits (article generation, SOP creation, grading, Q&A) are temporarily unavailable
- A notification appears explaining that credits have been exhausted
- Members and admins are prompted to either upgrade the plan for a larger allocation or wait for the next billing cycle when credits reset
Non-credit actions (browsing existing articles, viewing progress, managing audiences) continue to work normally.
Tips for managing credits¶
- Activate assets selectively — Only activate the documents that are most relevant. Content analysis on activation consumes credits.
- Prioritize high-value content — Focus on the concepts and processes that matter most to your team first.
- Monitor the meter — Keep an eye on the credit usage meter in the sidebar to avoid unexpected exhaustion.
- Upgrade when needed — If your team consistently runs out of credits, consider moving to a higher plan tier.
